Merry Christmas! We realize most people will be spending time with their friends and families today. And surfing the net won’t be a priority (and rightly so!). But in case you have a bout of insomnia, we’d love to hear from you! What’s the best gift you gave this past year and what’s the best one you’ve received? Here’s Mrs. Defined Sight’s answers:
Best Gift Given This Year:
Free haircuts. Bet y’all didn’t know that one about me! To explain how it started, I’ve never been professionally trained. However, I paid attention when I got my own haircut at a salon and asked a lot of questions. Mr. DS let me practice on his hair (thank goodness he doesn’t mind a good buzz cut with #1 on when I mess up). And eventually, I started doing my own! I can keep short haircuts like pixies or other bobs up really well, but usually head in to the professionals when my hair is past my shoulders. Of course, this was all with the goal to support our cheap, ahem, I mean money saving lifestyle.
Eventually, I started doing others’ hair as well. Mainly family and friends. I figured I can help everyone save money! Especially my sister. She got married out of high school and cranked out 4 kids right away. Her kids are now teenagers and money is still extremely tight. My nieces want to keep up with the trends in high school and have highlights like all the other girls their age. So, to YouTube I went again and learned how to color hair without turning it green. Unless you want that color. Apparently rainbow is really in. My nieces look like unicorns running around. But, their birthday or Christmas gifts from me are usually temporary coloring kits for about $20-25, then I cut and highlight their hair. They could never afford this in a salon. I am guessing I am doing about $2,000 worth in haircuts & colorings per year just for my sister, her family and other close relatives. Overall, it’s a fun bonding activity and I’m happy I’m able to help where I can.
Best Gift Received This Year:
A Thank You Note. It caught me off-guard to receive a card last week. Someone who I hardly know and met this past year walks up to me and says, “Here you go. Merry Christmas!” I assumed it was a Christmas card, said thank you, it was nice seeing them again, tucked it in my bag and left as I needed to drive across town to work.
Later in the day, I remembered I was given the card. I pulled it out of my bag and it had my name on the envelope. I open it up and on a beautiful piece of stationary paper was a brief note. The words that brought me to tears were, “Thank you for being a positive influence on my life this past year.”
It was one of my goals to keep a positive perspective and professional during any situation. This note made me realize I earned a reputation with at least this person and kept up these goals. The unexpected cherry on top: I was a positive influence in their life.
That’s what I’m really striving for here folks. Just like any house we rented or owned, we always improved it and left it in better condition then when we found it. To have that same effect on people, is the point of this game in life I’m playing.
It’s Your Turn!
