Montana Vacation 2018
Well another fun filled family vacation is in the books! We had so much fun during last year’s Montana vacation, we decided to go back this year.
We are fortunate to have great friends that we can stay with who live in such a fun area. Check out the recap from Mrs. DS on them.
Of course we buy supplies for the week and leave them a little thank you gift for their hospitality upon departure. After all, we’d like to be invited back!
Vacationing is always less painful when you only have to pay for two nights in a hotel. The first one we saved $20 on a quick Expedia sale. No such luck on the second hotel. Small town, lack of options.
Let’s get to the fun stuff!
What We Did
My buddy is always chomping at the bit to get hiking and exploring when we get there. He had a place in mind he wanted to show me first thing.
So we packed some homemade beef jerky, waters, two bananas, and two heavy caliber pistols in case of (bear) emergency. Fortunately we did not have any bear sightings but we did hear reports of Grizzly in the area.
It was about a 3 mile hike all said and done. There were a couple of steep parts. Sadly, going back down wasn’t as fun as I thought it would be. Tough on the knees and lots of loose rock to throw a person off, especially with a heavy backpack on.
My body did seem to handle the altitude better than last year. I was pretty fatigued on the trails last year but it was a different story this time. Maybe getting used to it? The climb was even steeper this time around too.
We spent one morning at an outdoor natural hot springs. The weather was about perfect for it as the outside temp was still a bit cool but the water ranges from 85-102 degrees. I can about imagine the shenanigans that happen there from the local teenagers!
No pics unfortunately as I left my phone in the car!
The gals were nice enough to take the kids fishing at a little kid’s pond while we were hiking around. We are going to have to upgrade fishing poles as our little dude has taken quite a liking to it. I’m excited for some father son fishing trips in the future!
We did give the gals a small reprieve, long enough for them to get into town for a little break and some R&R. The kids were easy to supervise although I thought they were going to wear a hole through the trampoline from all of the hours they spent on it!
Aside from the kick ass picnic with the smoked chicken, we ate a few of the local “hole in the wall” eateries. My type of places! I don’t have too much of a problem supporting mom-and-pop restaurants.
Montana Vacation Stats
Sadly we averaged about two miles per gallon less than the last Montana trip. I attribute this to bad luck with wind direction, and using 87 octane gas this year vs 91 last year. I was curious as to the difference in fuel mileage and quite frankly, didn’t want to pay the increase cost per gallon this time around.
The last 300 miles of the trip we were bucking about a 30mph wind and I was passing everything but the gas stations trying to beat a storm that even the storm chasers were salivating at. We made it unscathed.
Our boy ended having a little motion sickness on the way back. Mom to the rescue! I won’t give you the graphic details in case you are reading this at breakfast or lunch break.
Total trip cost came in at a shade below $750 for the 8 day Montana Vacation.
I’ll leave you with one final picture. This is what it’s all about folks!
Hey readers! Any vacations planned this year? Already go on one? Let’s hear the details! Thanks as always for reading and commenting!
